The story, neutrally told

RightAmbulance, police and fire crews were called to the Ballygowan Road in Crossnacreevy, Co Down, shortly before 11am on Friday 2 October after a trench collapsed. RightIt is understood that earthworks were under way at the time and that multiple people were trapped. RightThe Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said two fire appliances from Knock, one from Carryduff, one from Cadogan and two specialist rescue teams were in attendance, and described the incident as ongoing.

RightThe Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it sent three emergency ambulances and two HART teams, and that no one had been taken from the scene. MixedThe Daily Mail reported that two people had died while a number remained trapped beneath the trench, with firefighters using specialist equipment to reach them; later reports from the Irish Independent, The Irish Times, the Evening Standard and the Daily Mirror also say two people have died, and do not repeat the claim that others remain trapped. MixedGavin Robinson, the DUP politician for East Belfast, said it had been confirmed that two people had lost their lives; the Evening Standard (Press Association copy) describes him as DUP leader and quotes a social media post saying Ballygowan Road would remain closed.

MixedThe Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said it received a 999 call at 10.45am; The Irish Times and the Evening Standard call it a workplace incident, and the Irish Independent also says it was a workplace incident, citing the Belfast Telegraph for the trench collapse and earthworks. RightThe Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland told the Belfast Telegraph its inspectors were on site making enquiries and that it would be inappropriate to comment further while they continued. RightThe PSNI said the Ballygowan Road was closed and advised drivers to use another route; East Belfast DUP MP Gavin Robinson said it was shut in both directions, affecting the 512 Ulsterbus service, and that his thoughts were with those caught up.

LeftThe Daily Mirror, citing Belfast Live, said police closed a section of the road between Houston Road and Knockbreda Road; a PSNI spokesperson described a "workplace-related incident" and said the Health and Safety Executive had been advised. RightPoliticians called it a tragedy: Alliance MP Sorcha Eastwood said two workers had been killed in a trench collapse, Ulster Unionist Kathryn Owen urged people not to speculate while the PSNI investigates, and SDLP MLA Matthew O'Toole said they would seek to understand the circumstances; the coverage gives no names or details of the two who died, or of the employer.
