The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Emmerdale character Vinny Dingle, played by Bradley Johnson, left the soap in the episode shown on Monday 12 October, in which he appeared in court to be sentenced. Centre · 1Digital Spy previewed the storyline on 8 October, saying Vinny would go to court the following week to hear his punishment for causing death by dangerous driving. Centre · 1Radio Times says Vinny inadvertently caused the deaths of Jimmy King and Dawn Fletcher in August, when a car driven by Jimmy crashed through the tent at Dawn's wedding; a flashback showed Vinny was on a video call to Gabby Thomas at the time and that Jimmy had been forced to swerve to avoid a collision.

Centre · 1Before the hearing, Vinny left flowers at Jimmy's grave and the Dingles gathered to support him, according to Digital Spy's preview, which quoted an unnamed source saying he was not cut out for prison life. Centre · 1In the episode, his mother Mandy believed that, as it was a first offence, he would not be jailed for long, but the judge said she intended to make an example of him and sentenced him to 10 years. Centre · 1Nicola, Jimmy's widow, did not plan to attend court and threw her letter in the bin; she later shared a moment with Mandy and said she was sorry another family had been destroyed. Nicola and Joe eventually opened letters Vinny had written the night before, in which he apologised and seemed to accept a custodial sentence.

Centre · 1The episode ended with a twist: the judge was shown placing her wig in her car and opening a briefcase of cash, matching one Joe Tate was earlier seen with, which Radio Times says suggests Joe paid her to give Vinny a longer sentence. The outlet leaves open whether Vinny will return.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
