The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has written to the Green Party of England and Wales to ask for more information about a 'Zionism is racism' motion passed at the party's conference earlier this month, in order to assess its practical implications and potential impact. Mixed · 2An EHRC spokesperson said the watchdog had received complaints alleging unlawful activity under the Equality Act 2010, including concerns that Jewish people could face discrimination because of their beliefs following the motion's adoption. Mixed · 2The EHRC said it would assess the information carefully and take action where appropriate, recognised that many Jewish people would be feeling vulnerable following the motion, and said compliance with the Act was likely to hinge on the motion's practical effects.

Right · 1The Daily Mail reported that the EHRC also said freedom of expression is fundamental and must be protected, that it is not mutually exclusive with freedom from discrimination, and urged those in authority to balance the two. Mixed · 2A Green Party spokesperson said the party will not discriminate against or exclude people for holding Zionist views, that the motion sets out a political position with no impact on membership conditions or internal disciplinary processes, and that its antisemitism guidance is unchanged. Mixed · 2The letter followed Labour's announcement that it would end local council power-sharing deals with the Greens unless local Green groups reject the policy; the Daily Mail reported that Labour is in coalition with the Greens in Sheffield, Lewes and Warwick, and that local Green groups were given seven days to respond.

Right · 1According to the Daily Mail, Prime Minister Andy Burnham told PMQs on Wednesday that Labour 'cannot support a partnership' with the Greens and called the motion 'anti-Semitic', and Labour chair Bridget Phillipson said the policy has no place in British politics. Right · 1The Greens called Labour's instruction to local parties undemocratic and accused it of conflating criticism of Israel with antisemitism, while leader Zack Polanski, who said he is 'the only Jewish leader of a political party', replied to Burnham on X. Right · 1The Daily Mail added that Karen Newman of the Board of Deputies of British Jews welcomed Labour's move, that opponents say the motion calls for the eradication of Israel because it refers only to a single Palestinian state, and that Polanski skipped the 4 October conference vote in Brighton to campaign in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, which he lost to Labour.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
