The story, neutrally told

Left · 1Oscar-winning documentary filmmaker Errol Morris told Variety that he filmed a two-hour Interrotron interview with Elizabeth Holmes, the convicted founder of Theranos, and is contemplating releasing it. Left · 2Morris said the interview was filmed at the height of Holmes's success and is "not very well-known if it is known at all"; he said he is "sincerely interested in putting that out as an unedited film". Left · 1Morris, who says he has directed about 1,000 commercials, was hired by Holmes in 2015 to shoot a series of Theranos ads, which Variety notes have been criticised for contributing to her mythmaking.

Left · 1Morris said he had no reason to believe Holmes was a fraud when he made the ads, when she was on the cover of Forbes, but that this changed over time; he denied knowingly representing a fraud, noting that others on the Theranos board were also involved at the time. Left · 2He said he had tried for years to make a documentary about Holmes but could not because she was under indictment and there was heavy litigation. Left · 2Morris said the footage would offer a comparison of "Elizabeth before and Elizabeth after", and that he is interested in her psychology of self-deception; he said she lied "many, many times" but that he wonders whether she saw them as lies.

Left · 1He said he had not yet been able to see Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim's Holmes documentary "You Can See Everything", but had recently watched Alex Gibney's 2019 film "The Inventor" for the first time, noticing that it begins and ends with his interview with Holmes and wondering how Gibney obtained extra footage from the ads. Left · 1The Hollywood Reporter, citing Variety, said A24's "You Can See Everything" has earned $45 million domestically in 10 days, expanding from 855 to 2,655 theaters in its second week, with some speculation it could reach $100 million. Left · 1Morris did not commit to a release or say why he had not shown the footage earlier, saying that he had "moved on" but now considers it an interesting document of what Holmes was like "when everything was going her way".
