The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Belgium's Remco Evenepoel won the European road race championship in Slovenia on Sunday 4 October, edging Italy's Giulio Ciccone in a photo finish. Centre · 1Italy's Christian Scaroni finished third, almost a minute behind. Centre · 1France 24 reported that Belgium launched Evenepoel, who rides for Red Bull-Bora hansgrohe, with 36km of the 196km course left, and Ciccone followed. Evenepoel slid on the tarmac on a corner but caught up with Ciccone, who had slowed to save energy.

Centre · 1CNA reported that Ciccone overtook Evenepoel with a few hundred metres left and looked set to win before the Belgian reeled him in. The two crossed the line wheel to wheel. Centre · 1Evenepoel was the pre-race favourite. Defending champion Tadej Pogacar was absent through injury, as were Jonas Vingegaard, Paul Seixas, Tom Pidcock and Mathieu van der Poel. Pogacar still appeared from a car window at the start in Ljubljana. Centre · 1Evenepoel said the win helped him recover from missing the world title, where he finished in the group behind winner Brandon McNulty in Montreal. He said: "I thought I had won, but you can never be sure."

Centre · 1On Monday Ciccone, 31, of Lidl-Trek, challenged the verdict on social media. He said the margin was 0.0028 seconds and that in footage where the finish line is visible he saw something he could not square with the result. Centre · 1Ciccone said officials and his federation's technical staff had already explained the photo-finish criteria and that he was not asking for another explanation. He asked to see the photo finish that matches the actual finish line exactly. He also said Evenepoel raced "like a champion". Centre · 1The European Cycling Union, which organises the championships, had not responded to CNA's request for comment at the time of publication.
