The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Lebanese singer Fadel Shaker (spelled Chaker by The National) will perform in Riyadh on 22 October, his first concert in about 14 years and his first live show before an audience since 2012. Centre · 2The show, titled "Return of the Absent" (Awdat Al Ghayeb, after his song Ya Ghayeb), will be held at Abu Bakr Salem Theatre in Riyadh's Boulevard City as part of the seventh edition of Riyadh Season; tickets go on sale on 7 October. Centre · 1Turki Alalshikh, chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Entertainment Authority, announced the concert on social media after posting a teaser with Shaker's name and an hourglass symbol; Shaker also appeared in a video on Alalshikh's account talking about preparations and plans to travel to Riyadh.

Centre · 2The concert comes about three months after a Lebanese military court approved his release on bail in July, while proceedings tied to his former association with radical cleric Ahmed Al Assir continue. Centre · 1Shaker, who has repeatedly denied taking part in the 2013 clashes between Al Assir's supporters and the Lebanese army in Sidon, is due before Lebanon's Permanent Military Court on 21 October, a day before the concert; a 23 September hearing was postponed after his lawyer, Amata Mubarak, presented a medical excuse. Centre · 1He was tried in absence in 2020 and sentenced to a total of 22 years in prison over support for Al Assir's armed group; after about 12 years in the Ain Al Hilweh refugee camp he surrendered in October 2025 under a deal that vacated those convictions and ordered a new trial.

Centre · 1In May 2026 a Beirut criminal court acquitted Shaker and Al Assir in a separate case over an alleged 2013 attempt to kill Hilal Hammoud, a cleric aligned with Hezbollah. Centre · 2Shaker was a leading Arab romantic pop singer from the late 1990s, known for songs including Ya Ghayeb, Ma'oul, Law Ala Albi and Baya Al Qoloub, and was still performing in 2012, including at Abu Dhabi Festival and Morocco's Mawazine festival, before stepping back from mainstream music that year. Centre · 1He kept releasing music while living in the camp, including 2025 songs such as Ahla Rasma (over 40 million YouTube views by June) and a duet with his son Mohamed, and won Favourite Artist at the Joy Awards in Riyadh this year; a 2018 comeback song was dropped from an Egyptian Ramadan drama after criticism over his legal situation.

Centre · 1Gulf News says the Riyadh set is expected to include his best-known songs alongside recent releases.
