The story, neutrally told

The Football Association of Ireland is due to appear before an Oireachtas committee at Leinster House on Wednesday to answer questions about its handling of last week's game against Israel. The fixture went ahead after a player vote, despite criticism against the backdrop of Israel's war on Gaza; Ireland won the Nations League match 3-0. Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu left the squad before the game.

Chief executive David Courell and other executives are expected to face questions from TDs and Senators on the sports committee. Some opposition TDs have been highly critical of the FAI; People Before Profit's Ruth Coppinger said in the Dáil on Tuesday that Courell and the board should resign. Social Democrats sport spokesman Daniel Ennis called on the board to support players who do not want to play the next fixture, and claimed eight players feel that way.

Ireland are due to play Israel again in Serbia next weekend, and Ennis said he would protest outside Thursday's Ireland v Austria game at the Aviva Stadium rather than attend.
