The story, neutrally told

Right · 2Relatives of American victims of the 7 October 2023 Hamas-led attack asked the US Congress to investigate it, during a memorial ceremony at the State Department in Washington on Wednesday 14 October 2026. Right · 2The ceremony was hosted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and his wife, Allison Lutnick. CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper also attended. It was closed to the press, and family members spoke to reporters afterwards. Right · 1Ruby Chen, father of Itay Chen, a 19-year-old IDF soldier killed on 7 October whose remains were returned from Gaza in November 2025, was the main voice for the demand. He said Israel's government has not established a state commission of inquiry and that Congress could do so for the American victims.

Right · 2Chen said Congress has a responsibility to examine the deaths of the 46 US citizens killed in the attack. He also called for the US to bring those who financed or helped prepare it to justice, naming Qatar and Turkey as places where people he holds responsible remain free. Right · 1Chen also said Israeli ministers like to visit the US and that an impartial US committee would give them a reason to come, adding that nobody, including Israel's prime minister, should fear "the honest facts". Right · 1Ido Dan, a relative of two people killed on 7 October, said the probe was fundamental to the promise of "never again".

Right · 1The families were not unanimous. David Brief, whose son died a year after being shot on 7 October, said he was unsure a formal US investigation was necessary. He said such a call was a way of pressuring Israel's government, whose responsibility he said it clearly was. Right · 1The proposal has not been formally adopted by Congress or the Trump administration, according to the Jerusalem Post. Right · 1In Israel the question of an inquiry is politically divisive ahead of the 27 October election. The Knesset narrowly passed a bill in December for a "special" commission with politically appointed commissioners, which opposition parties oppose. They are holding a rally with victims' families in Tel Aviv on 24 October demanding a regular commission.

Right · 2Other attendees described the memorial as personal. Chen said Cooper still wore the dog tag Chen gave him at Itay's funeral, and Abbey Onn, whose relatives were killed at Nir Oz, said Rubio and the Lutnicks spoke from the heart. Some relatives also said they still lack basic answers about what happened to their loved ones.

Framing
Both Israeli right-leaning outlets report the families' call as a demand for accountability after Israel failed to set up its own inquiry. The Jerusalem Post pairs it with a warm account of the memorial; JNS focuses on the inquiry and the disagreement among families.
Emphasis
The Post stresses personal moments (Cooper's dog tag, Lutnick's 9/11 loss) and the lack of formal adoption by Congress. JNS stresses Chen's quotes, the Israeli election context and David Brief's dissent.
Leaves out or plays down
Neither carries a response from Congress, the administration or the Israeli government. The Post does not mention the dissenting family view or the election context.
Charged language
“massacre”“terrorist attacks”
For example
“Three years after Hamas's October 7 massacre, and with Israel yet to establish a state commission of inquiry” — The Jerusalem Post
“where the question of launching a potential state commission of inquiry into Oct. 7 has divided the country politically” — JNS
