The story, neutrally told

FIFA has accused UEFA of waging a "misinformation campaign" and trying to influence the race for the FIFA presidency. On Tuesday FIFA urged a US court to reject UEFA's discovery request, which is tied to Gianni Infantino's investment proposal for World Cup rights. UEFA had asked a US federal court last month for testimony and documents for a planned criminal complaint in Switzerland against Infantino over the abandoned plan to move World Cup commercial rights into a subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE).

UEFA alleged Infantino developed the proposal in secret and bypassed normal governance; it said investors would have paid $4.2bn for a stake, valuing the business at about $20bn, which it said undervalued the rights. FIFA's filing in the Southern District of Florida called UEFA's claims false or misleading, said the plan needed approval from member associations and the FIFA Council, and argued UEFA confused equity value with enterprise value, which it put well over $30 billion. FIFA said UEFA filed its application just before the election, which Infantino, seeking a fourth term, faces in March.

The FFE project was abandoned in July after opposition from several confederations, including UEFA, over a lack of consultation. Separately, the Swiss Football Association said on Wednesday its executive committee withdrew its support for Infantino's candidacy at a 25 September meeting, having endorsed him in June. The SFV said incidents at FIFA raise "fundamental questions regarding leadership, governance, transparency and decision-making processes".
