The story, neutrally told

Right · 2A fire alarm went off during a staging of the play "October 7" at Cahn Auditorium at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, on Tuesday night, 6 October 2026, and the theatre was evacuated. Right · 2The play was written by Irish journalists Phelim McAleer and Ann McElhinney and is built from word-for-word testimonies of survivors of the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023. Northwestern's Hillel staged it, presented by the Unreported Story Society and directed by Jeff Gurner. Right · 1According to McAleer, who watched via Zoom with McElhinney while their production team was on site, someone pulled the alarm about a quarter of the way into the show before a full house of roughly 940.

Right · 2Police and fire authorities responded. After the all-clear, attendees went back in through a security search, which delayed the production. McAleer said about half the audience returned, and the last 20 minutes were performed, ending in a standing ovation; JNS reported video of the ovation. Right · 1Who set off the alarm and why is not established. Early online posts said a student was responsible, but McElhinney and McAleer later said that was not confirmed. Gurner said campus security told him the university would investigate internally. Right · 2McAleer called for a police investigation and prosecution of those responsible, and said organisers intended to file a formal police report. He called those responsible "demonic" and said the incident made the team more determined to take the play to every US campus.

Right · 1Abby Polin, aunt of the murdered hostage Hersh Goldberg-Polin, attended and called the act by an "alleged Jew-hater" "beyond appalling". Gurner called it an "absurd little act of imagined revolutionary activism" that "achieved exactly nothing". Elad Strohmayer, Israel's consul-general in Chicago, said the investigation must establish whether the alarm was deliberately set off, and that those responsible must be held accountable if so. Right · 1Northwestern did not respond to the Jerusalem Post's request for comment by publication time. The play has further dates at CUNY and Cornell in December and the Holocaust Museum in Los Angeles in January.

Calls for a police investigation and prosecution, the audience's resilience and standing ovation, and concern for Jewish safety on campus.
