The story, neutrally told

M. Night Shyamalan's supernatural thriller 'Remain' had a surprise world premiere at Los Angeles' Beyond Fest on Tuesday night. It screened ahead of a retrospective showing of Shyamalan's 1998 film 'The Sixth Sense', and the director introduced it himself. Reactions on social media praised Gyllenhaal as 'incredible' and called the film 'unlike anything' Shyamalan has done.

Critic Griffin Schiller described it as Shyamalan 'at his most earnest and sincere', and actor-filmmaker Luke Barnett predicted it would 'crush' at the box office. The film stars Gyllenhaal, Phoebe Dynevor and Julie Hagerty as an architect recovering from depression who moves to Cape Cod and meets a mysterious woman. It was co-created with novelist Nicholas Sparks, and first appeared as a bestselling novel by the pair in 2025.

Warner Bros. will release it on 5 February 2027, moved from 23 October 2026 to be closer to Valentine's Day. The Hollywood Reporter noted Shyamalan earlier called it 'my highest-testing movie of my career', and that his previous film, 'Trap' (2024), made $84 million on a $30 million budget.
