The story, neutrally told

Right · 2Fisherman Brandon McGirl caught a 1,116-pound bluefin tuna off New Hampshire on Saturday, more than 150 pounds heavier than the previous state record set in 2013. Right · 1McGirl was on the Out of Line, a Savage Charters NH boat captained by Jamie Savage, on an overnight trip out of Rye Harbor on the New Hampshire Seacoast, as reported by WMUR. Right · 2McGirl said conditions were difficult and rougher than hoped. As the crew prepared to call it a night, his reel began clicking.

Right · 2The crew chased the fish for about a mile. Unable to get it on deck, they towed it toward the harbor and lifted it from the water there, according to the New York Post. Savage said they immediately knew it was bigger than anything either of them had seen. Right · 1The New York Post, citing On The Water, said the largest bluefin on record in US waters weighed 1,142 pounds, 12 ounces, caught off Block Island, Rhode Island, in September 1981, about 27 pounds more than McGirl's fish. Right · 1Gov. Kelly Ayotte congratulated the crew on Facebook, writing "Now THAT is a catch."

Right · 2The tuna will be sold to market and could be shipped as far as Japan, though its tail will stay at the harbor as a souvenir. McGirl told Foster's Daily Democrat he will be paid by check later and does not know what it will fetch. Right · 2Both outlets compare the catch with a nearly 500-pound bluefin caught off San Diego last month; the Post gives that fish's weight as 446 pounds, estimated at 500 whole.
