The story, neutrally told

Right · 2A Gallup and With Honor survey released on Sunday 25 October asked Americans which three of 12 values the country most needs today. Right · 2Overall, Americans most often chose honesty (34%), responsibility (32%) and integrity (31%), followed by equality (29%) and fairness (26%); patriotism was chosen by 21%. Right · 1Patriotism produced the widest partisan gap: Fox News reports 46% of Republicans put it in their top three versus 6% of Democrats, a 40-point difference.

Right · 1Republicans placed patriotism first (46%), then responsibility (41%) and honesty (38%); Democrats chose equality (44%), fairness (34%) and honesty (32%). Independents most often picked honesty, responsibility and integrity, with 15% choosing patriotism. Right · 1Equality was the second-largest gap, chosen by 44% of Democrats and 10% of Republicans, and fairness was chosen by 34% of Democrats and 15% of Republicans. Right · 2Age also mattered: 32% of adults 65 and older said the country needs patriotism, against 12% of those aged 18 to 39 and 22% of those 40 to 64.

Right · 2Asked separately which values most Americans share regardless of politics, 76% named at least one of the 12, 59% at least two and 46% at least three; freedom (38%), patriotism (32%) and service (30%) were most often named. Right · 1Fox News adds that 79% said respecting different values matters more than sharing them (84% of Democrats, 81% of independents, 72% of Republicans), and 70% said leaders must compromise across party lines. Gallup concluded that "the ultimate shared value is that Americans agree to disagree." The survey ran May 12–22 with more than 3,000 US adults. Right · 1Hot Air's David Strom, writing opinion, read the results as showing Democrats are less attached to America, though he conceded the rankings are relative and a lower ranking doesn't mean a value is unimportant.
