The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Gaza's Health Ministry said on Friday 16 October 2026 that at least 466 Palestinians, including 157 children, have died from malnutrition and starvation since 2024. Mixed · 2The figures were released in a statement for World Food Day, and the ministry said malnutrition and starvation rates had reached "catastrophic levels". Mixed · 2Elderly people accounted for the largest share of deaths: 189, or 40.5%.

Mixed · 2The ministry said more than 1.4 million Palestinians, about 67% of Gaza's population, are expected to face crisis-level food insecurity or worse through the end of 2026. Centre · 1According to Anadolu, the ministry also recorded more than 158,000 cases of acute malnutrition among children under 5 from 2024 through August 2026, and said under-5 mortality rose from 13.6 to 33.4 deaths per 1,000 live births between 2022 and 2025. Mixed · 2It estimated that 74,200 children will need treatment for acute malnutrition through April 2027.

Mixed · 2The ministry said anaemia among pregnant women reached 61% in 2026, against 41% before the war, and that about 4,000 pregnancy losses were recorded in the first half of 2026, more than three times the previous six months. Mixed · 2The ministry called on the international community and the UN to ensure unrestricted entry of food, therapeutic nutritional supplements and medicines, to prioritise children, pregnant and breastfeeding women and the elderly, and to support local food production. Centre · 1The UN declared famine in Gaza in August 2025. Israel tightened crossing restrictions in March 2025, and aid entered on a limited basis until February 2026, when a limited increase in trucks was allowed under a ceasefire agreement, according to Anadolu; Gaza's government media office says Israel has let in only about 34% of the agreed aid trucks.

Left · 1UNICEF said in a report on Friday that the ceasefire had let more humanitarian and commercial supplies in and helped avert a prolonged famine, but that gains are fragile and acute malnutrition remains a risk. Spokesperson Ricardo Pires said supply flows must stay predictable and continuous. Left · 1Al Jazeera reports that Israel said on Wednesday no commercial goods had entered Gaza in days and blamed a tax dispute between local merchants and Hamas; Hamas called this "baseless" and Gaza's Government Media Office called it a "blatant disinformation campaign".
