The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will open on 11 December 2026, and an exhibition on Frank Gehry's design for the museum will be part of its inaugural programme. Centre · 2According to the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), the exhibition will use original sketches, early hand-built models and archival materials to trace how the late architect's vision developed in response to Abu Dhabi's landscape, culture and ambitions for the arts. Centre · 2The museum, on Saadiyat Island in the Saadiyat Cultural District, was designed by Gehry, whom Gulf News describes as a Pritzker Prize-winning architect, and his firm Gehry Partners.

Centre · 2DCT Abu Dhabi says the design links galleries with shaded courtyards, terraces and outdoor spaces for art, and that the building's seafront position shaped its orientation, routes and public spaces. Centre · 2The museum has 11,600 square metres of interior gallery space and 23,000 square metres of outdoor exhibition space; Gulf News adds that it has 28 galleries and a total building area of 84,000 square metres. Centre · 2Ten monumental cones are among its most distinctive features: nine are clad in stainless steel mesh and one in onyx and glass, and they shade public spaces and draw warm air upwards to ventilate courtyards and terraces.

Centre · 2Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi, said Gehry understood the building had to be inspired by the emirate and called it "a work of art in its own right". Centre · 2Meaghan Lloyd, a partner at Gehry Partners, said the museum is "an expression of Frank Gehry’s love for Abu Dhabi", and that the firm is honoured to carry the project to completion in his name. Centre · 1Developed in partnership with the Solomon R Guggenheim Foundation, the museum will focus on modern and contemporary art from the 1960s to the present.

Centre · 2Tickets went on sale in September, with standard adult admission priced at Dh70 ($19), and can be booked through the museum's website.
