The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Haiti has postponed indefinitely the elections scheduled for December and February, its Provisional Electoral Council announced. Centre · 1The first round of presidential and legislative elections had been set for 13 December and the second round for 21 February 2027. Centre · 1The council's statement said the period originally scheduled for the campaign had been postponed and gave no new election date, saying only that the timetable would be made public as soon as possible.

Centre · 1It said the schedule would reflect the technical and operational requirements of the process and the conditions needed for the proper conduct of its stages. An anonymous council member told AFP that the 13 December date no longer stands and that a new timetable is being prepared. Centre · 1According to Anadolu, the council cited consultations with political actors and the Council of Ministers' adoption on 5 October 2026 of amendments to the Electoral Decree of 2 June 2026, and said new dates will follow once an updated framework is finalised with authorised political bodies. Centre · 2The council extended the online candidate registration and document submission deadline to 31 October and urged eligible citizens to keep registering on the voter rolls, which are still open.

Centre · 1Only 769,000 voters had been registered by Tuesday since registration began on 20 July. Centre · 2Gang violence has hampered preparations: several gang-controlled municipalities had no registration centres, and road closures caused by gang threats have stopped electoral materials reaching parts of the country. Centre · 2Haiti has held no general election since 2016, and no president has been elected since Jovenel Moise was assassinated in July 2021.

Centre · 1A transitional arrangement set up in 2024 governs the country. The Transitional Presidential Council's mandate ended in February, leaving Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime and his Cabinet in charge, ruling largely by decree. Centre · 1About 1.5 million of Haiti's roughly 11 million people are displaced by violence, according to the International Organization for Migration. Centre · 1UN human rights chief Volker Turk said last week that gang violence had left at least 5,700 people dead or wounded this year, more than 1,000 women and girls raped and 230 kidnappings recorded up to 11 September, adding that the real figures are likely much higher.

Centre · 1A UN-backed Gang Suppression Force, which replaced the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support mission, is being deployed slowly, with about 1,500 of a planned 5,500 personnel so far. The UN Security Council late last month extended its mandate by six months, stressing security conditions conducive to free and fair elections. Centre · 1Haitians quoted by AFP expressed doubt and hope: a Port-au-Prince taxi driver said he had little hope of voting this year, while a voter at a registration centre in Delmas said people finally want to vote for a government that brings solutions.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.

Emphasis
France 24: registration numbers, UN casualty and displacement figures, public doubt, Gang Suppression Force strength. Anadolu: decree amendments, 31 October candidate deadline, the transitional government's lack of elected officials.
