The story, neutrally told

A Harris County sheriff's deputy was shot on Wednesday 30 September in the 1100 block of Bayou, near the East Freeway in eastern Harris County, Texas. Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a possible suspect fled in a patrol car. The sheriff's office said an active search was underway and asked residents to avoid the area.

The sheriff's office later put out a wanted poster naming Chase Layne Patin as the person sought in connection with the shooting. Hindustan Times, citing a KPRC2 report, said Patin is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached. It described Patin as about 5 foot 7 inches tall, with a dark beard, a black cap and a gray shirt. It said a report of Patin being 25 years old is unverified. According to Hindustan Times, which cited local news reports, the deputy was responding to a family disturbance and was shot in the lower body. It said Gonzalez described the deputy as hospitalised in fair condition.

Hindustan Times said reports indicate the stolen patrol car was found near Dell Dale and the East Freeway with Patin not in it. Channelview Independent School District said police asked residents to stay inside and avoid the area near Channelview High School. It said it was letting the sheriff's office use its grounds for a press conference and that classes would run as normal on Thursday 1 October. The earlier BNO News report, based on preliminary information, said the deputy's condition was unknown and that neither the deputy nor the suspect had been identified.
