The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1HBO and Warner Bros. TV are reviving Lena Dunham's Girls as a five-episode limited series that is set to go into production in 2027. Centre · 1On Tuesday 13 October, HBO Max shared a video announcement on Instagram showing Dunham on a call with her three original co-stars: Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet. Centre · 1Dunham will reprise Hannah, Williams will play Marnie, Kirke will play Jessa and Mamet will play Shoshanna; Andrew Rannells, who played Elijah Krantz, also joins the call and says he is in.

Centre · 1In the video Dunham asks whether they would do the show again next summer, and jokes about whether it can still be called Girls because they are "old as f..." before the call cuts off. Centre · 1Because the teaser says only that production will happen in 2027, it is unclear when the five episodes will be available to watch. Centre · 1Adam Driver, who played Dunham's love interest Adam Sackler, was absent from the video call, and Digital Spy does not report whether he will return.

Centre · 1Girls began in April 2012, ran for six seasons and ended in April 2017; it followed four young women in New York City, with a premise drawn from Dunham's own life. Centre · 1The BBC ranked it 30th on its 2021 list of the best series of the century and Rolling Stone placed it 65th on its 2022 list of the 100 greatest TV shows; all six seasons are available on HBO Max. Centre · 1Fans responded warmly on Instagram, with one calling it the "best news of the century".
