The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2A Hong Kong court sentenced Anson Kew, 19, to eight years in prison on Thursday 29 October 2026 for splashing corrosive liquid on a Singaporean tourist in return for a promised HK$10,000 (US$1,280). Centre · 2Mr Justice Andrew Chan Hing-wai of the High Court said Kew, who was 17 at the time, had caused a "lifelong impact" on the victim, Jiang Wen, 36, who suffered second-degree burns in the attack on 9 June 2025. Centre · 1Kew threw the solution at Jiang as she got into a vehicle in Wan Chai; she screamed in pain and collapsed after feeling an intense burning sensation on her face and legs, and Kew fled.

Centre · 1CNA, republishing South China Morning Post copy with added detail attributed to The Standard, said Kew was dressed in black with a hat and mask, that the liquid was sulfuric acid at nearly 70 per cent concentration, and that Jiang spent 61 days in hospital. Centre · 1Medical reports showed about 10 to 11 per cent of her body surface was burned, mainly her face and limbs; she had emergency surgery, then skin grafts and further suturing. Centre · 1According to CNA, citing The Standard, Jiang returned to Singapore for more treatment, was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and was left with permanent scars.

Centre · 1Evidence showed Kew had scouted the location on Burrows Street in Wan Chai days earlier. He eventually turned himself in to police but did not explain why he targeted Jiang, and it was not mentioned in court whether he knew her. Centre · 1Citing a background report, the judge noted that Kew told a probation officer the attack was a "paid job" for which he was promised HK$10,000. Centre · 1The court heard Kew committed theft at 14, was placed in a juvenile detention centre after breaching probation, and dropped out of school around 16. The report said he had a history of drug use and was associated with triad societies, though he denied membership.

Centre · 1Kew pleaded guilty to one count of throwing corrosive fluid with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Chan called him "money-oriented" with "questionable" motivation to change, and described the attack as "carefully planned". Centre · 1The judge took a starting point of 12 years' imprisonment and cut it by one-third for the guilty plea, giving eight years.
