The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Crystal Harris, who was married to Playboy founder Hugh Hefner until his death in 2017, has asked Jessica Biel to reconsider playing a fictional version of Hefner's wife in the upcoming film Playmates. Mixed · 2After Biel's casting was announced, Harris posted a message to Biel on Instagram; the Daily Mail reports that Harris first sent it privately and then shared it with their three million followers. Mixed · 2In the message, Harris wrote: "Please reconsider playing Hugh Hefner's wife if this film intends to romanticize him or the Playboy world. I was actually his wife, and I experienced sexual, emotional, financial and physical abuse in that relationship."

Right · 1Harris added that many other women have come forward with allegations of rape, coercion, drugging and exploitation, and that there are "deeply troubling concerns involving minors". These are allegations made by Harris; the articles do not report any response from Hefner's estate, Playboy or the film's makers. Right · 1In comments to the Daily Mail, Harris called Hefner a "narcissistic and misogynistic pornographer" and said they had yet to see the script. Harris asked the filmmakers for an "honest" portrayal and hoped the film would deliver a message of empowerment for women beyond Playboy. Right · 1Former Playboy model and journalist Lisa Guerrero, who hosted A&E's Secrets of Playboy, backed Harris, saying any attempt to soften or humanize Hefner's image was "one too many".

Mixed · 2Playmates is written and directed by Lorraine Nicholson, daughter of Jack Nicholson, and is a Searchlight film. Bill Pullman plays Hefner and Lily-Rose Depp plays a hopeful Playmate of the Month; Biel's character is fictional and not based on any of Hefner's three real wives. Mixed · 2The film is described as a coming-of-age story about 13-year-old Elle, who considers the Playboy Mansion her second home, and her friendship with Anna, one of seven hopefuls vying to be Playmate of the Month. It draws on Nicholson's own childhood experiences at the Mansion. Mixed · 2Harris married Hefner on New Year's Eve 2012, aged 26 to his 86, and published a memoir, Only Say Good Things: Surviving Playboy and Finding Myself, in 2024 about life at the Mansion.
