The story, neutrally told

Left · 2Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler's reboot of The X-Files to series. Mixed · 2Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel star as "two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents who form an unlikely bond when they are assigned to a long-shuttered division devoted to cases involving unexplained phenomena," according to the logline. Left · 1Variety, citing a source, reports that the pair play new characters rather than versions of Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully and David Duchovny's Fox Mulder.

Mixed · 2Coogler wrote, directed and executive produced the pilot, and will executive produce the series with showrunner Jennifer Yale; Variety says Hulu picked up the pilot in February. Mixed · 2The show is produced by Coogler's Proximity Media and 20th Television, with Onyx Collective also named as a producer by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter. Mixed · 2Original creator Chris Carter, Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian are executive producers; Simone Harris, Deadwyler and Patel are co-executive producers.

Mixed · 2Coogler said he has loved The X-Files for a long time, that the team wanted to honour what made the original connect with people "while also finding our own way into that world," and that Proximity co-founder Ludwig Göransson scored the pilot. Centre · 1Deadline says the order caps a journey of more than three years and falls under Coogler's five-year exclusive TV deal with Disney, parent of Hulu, 20th TV and Onyx; Carter said in a 2023 podcast that Coogler was "going to remount The X Files with a diverse cast." Left · 2The original series ran on Fox from 1993 and spawned two films, and Fox revived it for two seasons in 2016 and 2018; Variety counts 11 seasons in total, with 61 Emmy nominations and 15 wins.

Left · 1Variety calls the project Coogler's most high-profile since Sinners, which received a record 16 Oscar nominations and won four awards.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
