The story, neutrally told

Hundreds of Israelis entered the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem on Wednesday 30 September, during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, according to the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf. Al Jazeera, citing the Waqf, put the number at about 700, including former lawmaker Moshe Feiglin, and said they entered under Israeli police protection. The Waqf official told Anadolu the visitors performed rituals, prayers, dancing and singing, which the official said violates the status quo at the site.

Under the status quo predating 1967, the Waqf, affiliated with Jordan’s Ministry of Endowments, administers the compound as a place of worship exclusively for Muslims; Anadolu says Israeli police have allowed non-Muslim entry through the Mughrabi Gate since 2003. Al Jazeera, citing Palestine's Wafa news agency and the Jerusalem governorate, reported continued Israeli restrictions on Palestinian Muslims' entry and road closures near Lions’ Gate and Silwan. Daily figures differ: Anadolu cites the Waqf for more than 1,500 entries on Sunday, 1,700 on Monday and 1,400 on Tuesday, while Al Jazeera reports 966 on Tuesday.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry condemned the incursions "in the strongest terms" and urged the UN Security Council to act. Sukkot runs from 26 September to 2 October, followed by Simchat Torah on 3 October.
