The story, neutrally told

Five officials, including the chief of Cibinong prison near Jakarta, have been suspended after investigators found an apartment-style compound allegedly used by inmates. Rudi Setiawan, inspector general of the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, announced the suspensions and said dozens of inmates and staff had been questioned. The Ombudsman found more than 10 residential units separate from regular cells during a surprise inspection on 23 September.

Investigators reported air-conditioners, big-screen televisions, sofas, dining areas, a gym and a golf simulator under construction; Al Jazeera and BBC News also mention refrigerators and luxury vehicles. Ombudsman member Syafrida Rachmawati Rasahan said inmates were found inside the compound, in facilities resembling homestays, apartments and villas. The buildings were meant as staff housing, and investigators are examining whether they were converted for inmates; BBC News says prison officials claim the units were for staff.

The identities of the inmates have not been officially disclosed, and lawmakers, activists and watchdogs want to know who they were and whether officials took payments. BBC News reports the compound was demolished after public outcry, though its lede says lawmakers on Wednesday ordered the demolition; the other outlets do not mention this. The case adds to long-standing allegations that wealthy inmates can buy privileges; Al Jazeera notes a 2010 investigation found similar luxury.
