The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Instagram announced on Thursday 5 November that it is bringing Edits, its short-form video editing app, to desktop on Mac. Centre · 1Instagram says the desktop version is designed for more complex projects that benefit from a larger screen, mouse and keyboard. Centre · 2The app has a multi-track timeline, keyframes for transitions, audio waveforms for precise cuts, custom fonts and customisable keyboard shortcuts, which users can also import from other editing software.

Centre · 2It includes licensed and royalty-free music, sound and video effects, and automatic captions in multiple languages, and audio and text styles saved on mobile sync to desktop. Centre · 2Creators can publish directly from the desktop editor to Instagram, with features such as tagging and location, without moving files to their phones; video can be horizontal or vertical and exported in 4K without watermarks. Centre · 1Gulf News adds that the desktop version supports AI-assisted editing through connected agents, including Meta's Muse, to help assemble rough cuts, and describes the app as free.

Centre · 1Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, said in a blog post that creators often reach a point where a project gets too big for a phone, and that Edits is expanding to take on their most ambitious projects on desktop. Centre · 2The launch puts Edits in more direct competition with ByteDance's CapCut, which Meta aimed to challenge when it launched Edits on mobile (TechCrunch says last year; Gulf News says April 2025), and which has been on desktop for Windows and Mac since 2021. Centre · 1The desktop app is Mac-only for now and Instagram has not announced a Windows release date, according to Gulf News; Instagram previewed its desktop plans in June.

Centre · 2Instagram plans weekly desktop updates and is working to let creators edit one project across desktop and mobile; it says more than 50 million creators use Edits on mobile.
