The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Iran will not give up uranium enrichment or hand over its enriched uranium stockpile, Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said on Thursday 8 October 2026, according to Iranian state media. Centre · 1Asked whether Tehran could abandon enrichment, Eslami answered "Under no circumstances" and called enrichment an inseparable part of the nuclear process. Asked about handing over the stockpile, he said: "No, there is no such thing." Right · 1Reuters reported that the remarks followed a US statement that Iran must make "meaningful" reductions in its enrichment capacity, and that Eslami dismissed renewed US threats against Iran's nuclear facilities as "nothing new".

Centre · 1On the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Eslami said inspections of facilities damaged by US-Israeli attacks remain impossible because of continuing security threats, saying "As long as security is not established, naturally, their entry is not possible." Centre · 1He said IAEA inspectors had visited facilities that were not attacked and carried out routine inspections, criticised the agency for not acknowledging this, and accused it of acting under US and Israeli pressure to gather information about damaged sites. Centre · 1Iran's parliament approved legislation in June 2025 suspending cooperation with the IAEA after Israeli and US attacks, making inspections conditional on security guarantees and approval by the Supreme National Security Council. Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan were targeted in June 2025, and Natanz was struck again in March 2026.

Centre · 1The IAEA Board of Governors adopted a resolution in June calling on Iran to provide information on its enriched uranium stockpiles and allow access to verify nuclear material. The agency says it cannot verify the stockpile's status or whereabouts because of restricted access. Right · 1Iran and the US have exchanged proposals in recent weeks aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said Iran could reply within days to a US response to its proposal, under which the Strait could reopen within seven days if necessary conditions were met. Right · 1US President Donald Trump said later on Thursday that the US is having productive discussions with Iran and will not launch any attack before the November midterm congressional elections.

Mixed · 2Israel, the US and other Western states have long accused Iran of seeking nuclear weapons, pointing to enrichment to 60 percent, well above civilian needs and closer to the 90 percent needed for a weapon. Iran denies this, says its programme is exclusively peaceful and that enrichment is a right under the Non-Proliferation Treaty; Iranian authorities have said Tehran could agree to dilute its most highly enriched uranium.
