The story, neutrally told

Iran summoned the British ambassador to Tehran, Hugo Shorter, on Thursday 1 October to protest accusations linking it to a suspected sabotage plot targeting RAF Fairford, according to state media. Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Majid Takht-Ravanchi conveyed Tehran's "strong protest" at the British government's "destructive approach", rejected the "false and ridiculous claims", and demanded London officially clarify its position and "correct its inappropriate approach", IRIB reported. The summons followed remarks on Wednesday by Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who said there was a "strong indication" of Iranian involvement while stressing that the case remained a "complex and very serious police investigation".

Reuters, carried by Arab News, described the airbase as one used by US forces to strike Iran and said Iran called the accusations baseless. On Monday Iran's embassy in London rejected what it called "unfounded and malicious speculations" linking Iran to the arrest of five suspects near the base, and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the plot involved "the hands of a foreign actor" without naming a country. The base hosts US Air Force operations that have supported missions against Iran since February amid the wider Middle East war, and protection was heightened after Britain said in July its forces were ready to defend against retaliation following Revolutionary Guard warnings about US bombers operating from Fairford.
