The story, neutrally told

Donald Trump said on Tuesday he does not know if Iran will "give up yet", but that it is doing "very poorly" in its war with the US. He also insisted the US will win "very soon"; Al Jazeera's live coverage headlined that he gave no details. US and Iranian officials held separate talks with mediators on Monday, and Trump confirmed US officials had spoken with mediators in New York.

Trump denied reports by Axios and CNN that Washington had offered Iran sanctions relief, writing "I offered them NOTHING"; oil prices rose after the denial. Hossein Mohebbi, a Revolutionary Guards spokesperson, called Trump a "big liar", said Iran is not after nuclear weapons, and said the war can end only if Washington admits defeat and leaves. The Guards also released a 26-page letter urging Americans to vote out Trump's allies in the November midterms.

Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi said reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on Iran's conditions being met, and that Iran awaited a formal US response to its seven-point proposal sent through Qatar. Breitbart and Newsweek reported the rial fell to about 2.5 million to the dollar, a record low, and Breitbart quoted Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent saying the US blockade had cut Iran's oil exports through Hormuz to zero. The war began on 28 February when the US and Israel attacked Iran, and has killed thousands and displaced millions, according to Reuters.

Oil prices are a political pressure for Trump's party ahead of the November midterms, with Brent crude above $100.
