The story, neutrally told

England striker Ivan Toney pleaded not guilty on Thursday 1 October to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The 30-year-old, from Northampton, is accused of attacking Saber Da Silva at a nightclub in Wardour Street, Soho, on 6 December last year. The BBC says he is accused of headbutting and punching Mr Da Silva.

Toney stood in the dock to confirm his name and age, after arriving shortly after 9.30am with three members of his entourage. District Judge Briony Clarke said the case could be tried in the magistrates' court, but Toney elected a Crown Court trial before a judge and jury. He was given unconditional bail until a hearing at Southwark Crown Court on 29 October.

The case followed a Metropolitan Police investigation, and the charge was announced in late July. A spokesperson said he "acknowledges the charge and although he is naturally shocked, he looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court". Toney plays for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, has 10 England caps, was in the World Cup squad this summer and is not in the latest Nations League squad.
