The story, neutrally told

Left · 2England striker Ivan Toney, 30, appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday 29 October 2026 and pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. Left · 2Toney is accused of headbutting and punching Saber Da Silva at a nightclub on Wardour Street in Soho, central London, on 6 December last year. Left · 2Judge Christopher Hehir set a provisional trial date of 12 June 2028, about 20 months away, and apologised for the delay, saying the crown courts are under great pressure and have a massive backlog.

Left · 2Toney was released on unconditional bail after the hearing, which lasted about five minutes. The judge told Toney it was "very important" to stay in regular contact with solicitors, and gave the formal warning that failing to attend court is a criminal offence punishable by imprisonment and that the case would likely be tried in absence. Left · 2At an earlier hearing, prosecutors said the two men "squared up" before Toney allegedly "lunged forward and head-butted the complainant, followed by a few punches". The Guardian reports it was alleged that Da Silva sustained injuries to the nose and fingers; the Mirror places that earlier hearing at the Metropolitan Police investigation stage, while the Guardian says Toney entered a plea at Westminster magistrates court at the start of October and asked for a crown court trial. Left · 2The Metropolitan Police charged Toney about three weeks after the 2026 World Cup, with the charge announced in late July. A spokesperson for the player said Toney "looks forward to being given the opportunity to clear his name in court".

Left · 2Toney, who plays for Saudi Pro League club Al-Ahli, was in Thomas Tuchel's England squad at the 2026 World Cup and has 10 caps. Toney was left out of the squad for the latest Nations League fixtures. Left · 1The Guardian says the date means Toney has in effect been ruled out of Euro 2028, to be held in the UK and Ireland, because it appears inconceivable that the England manager would pick a player facing trial during the group stage. This is the paper's assessment; the Mirror does not draw that conclusion.
