The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios, defended the DC Universe on Threads over the weekend against criticism that its films are not building toward a major crossover event. Mixed · 2A commenter had posted an image listing Superman, Peacemaker, Supergirl, Creature Commandos, Clayface and Lanterns and asked, "What is this building towards???"; an account called lostuslandcomics replied that Gunn "doesn't have to build towards anything if the individual pieces work on their own" and that the MCU "reprogrammed people's expectations". Mixed · 2Gunn replied "I couldn't agree more", saying the DCU is "just an alternate universe" that can be entered at any place or time, and that he dislikes the idea that individual stories are not meaningful unless they lead to something else.

Left · 1He pointed to Star Wars, which he said has done this for 50 years across movies, shows, games and books, "admittedly without the tonal variety". Mixed · 2Gunn added that this does not mean there is no connectivity: the Superman saga runs from Superman into Man of Tomorrow and contains many characters introduced in other stories, but those stories do not exist only to set it up. Centre · 1He said he would like people to see Clayface because it is a great, fun horror movie in itself, not because of where the character appears "three movies from now".

Left · 1Clayface, directed by James Watkins, opened on Friday to $24 million from 3,458 North American theatres and took the No. 1 spot at the box office, according to Variety. Mixed · 2Gunn's next film, Superman: Man of Tomorrow, is due in theatres on July 9, 2027. Centre · 1Screen Rant, in an opinion piece, argued that the cohesion criticism is real and that Man of Tomorrow, reportedly featuring characters such as Supergirl, Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, John Stewart and Blue Beetle, could be the crossover the DCU needs.

Centre · 1Deadline noted that Marvel "might argue" Gunn's "only exist" phrasing is a little reductive, and framed the exchange against online comparisons of DC's Clayface with Marvel's upcoming Avengers: Doomsday.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
