The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1Japan's defence ministry said on Thursday 29 October 2026 that an object that may be a ballistic missile had been launched from North Korea. Centre · 1The ministry later said it estimated the object had already fallen. Centre · 1Japan's Prime Minister's Office outlined response measures, including gathering and analysing information, ensuring the safety of aircraft and vessels, and precautionary steps for possible contingencies, according to a provisional translation of its statement.

Centre · 1South Korea's military said North Korea fired an unidentified projectile into the East Sea, the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan, off its east coast. Centre · 1CNA reported that Japan's defence ministry separately confirmed the launch of what it said "appears to be a ballistic missile". Centre · 1The launch came less than a week after South Korea proposed talks over a border row, amid tensions over a landmine explosion in the Demilitarised Zone that wounded three South Korean soldiers.

Centre · 1A joint Seoul-UN investigation earlier this month concluded North Korea planted the mines, which Pyongyang has angrily denied; Kim Yo Jong called South Korean demands for an apology "despicable" and rejected an offer of medical equipment. Centre · 1CNA also noted concern that US President Donald Trump's overtures to Pyongyang could sideline Seoul, and that North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles in October a day after Trump suggested he might meet Kim Jong Un this year.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.

Framing
Both outlets report the launch as it was announced by government sources. The Times of India relays Japan's ministry posts and the Prime Minister's Office response. CNA leads with Seoul's statement and adds inter-Korean and US diplomatic context.
Emphasis
Official statements; CNA stresses the landmine dispute and Trump's overtures to Pyongyang.
Leaves out or plays down
The Times of India gives no South Korean account or background. CNA does not give Japan's estimate that the object had fallen or Tokyo's response measures. Neither reports the missile type, range or landing point.
