The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Japan's Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) raided the country's four major beer makers on Wednesday 7 October on suspicion of cartelisation in sales of beer and other products to wholesalers, the companies said. Centre · 2The firms are Kirin Holdings, Asahi Group Holdings, Sapporo and Suntory; Suntory is not publicly listed. Together they are reported to control more than 90 per cent of Japan's domestic beer market. Centre · 2The companies are suspected of coordinating prices over several years. NHK reported that the JFTC is examining whether they formed a cartel when they raised prices in April last year and October 2022, and the Japan Times, cited by the BBC, also said the investigation centres on those increases.

Centre · 2All four companies cited rising costs of raw materials, as well as factors such as energy and transportation, for their price rises. Centre · 1An anonymous source told AFP that representatives of the four companies are believed to have met periodically to discuss pricing and the timing of increases, and that this was the first time the JFTC had conducted on-site inspections over a wholesale beer pricing cartel. Centre · 2The companies confirmed the searches and said they would cooperate. Kirin said its subsidiary Kirin Brewery was searched on suspicion of violating the Antimonopoly Act, that it takes the matter "very seriously", and that the financial impact has not been determined. Asahi said it was subject to an investigation under the Act on Prohibition of Private Monopolization and Maintenance of Fair Trade, and Suntory said it was undergoing an on-site inspection.

Centre · 2Shares of the listed makers fell, by nearly 4 per cent at the worst point according to CNA. Sapporo fell as much as 3.73 per cent, Kirin briefly dropped a little over 3 per cent to its lowest level in more than three months, and Asahi fell nearly 2.5 per cent before recouping some losses. Centre · 1The JFTC declined to elaborate. NHK and a source said it is expected to continue the investigation and could file a criminal complaint. Centre · 1The raids follow a JFTC cartel probe earlier this year, in June, into six ice-cream makers including Morinaga Milk Industry and Meiji Holdings, which allegedly coordinated price rises beyond what higher raw material costs justified.

Every sentence links to the reporting it rests on. The pill in front of each says where its sources sit: Left, Centre or Right when one side supplies at least half of them, Mixed when they are evenly split. The number is how many outlets it cites.
