The story, neutrally told

Jennifer Lawrence will star in Zach Cregger's sci-fi thriller The Flood, a Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema project. Variety, Deadline, The Hollywood Reporter, Collider and The A.V. Club give a release date of 11 August 2028; Digital Spy says the film has no release date. Cregger will write, direct and produce from his original idea, with Amblin Entertainment producing alongside Roy Lee and Miri Yoon of Vertigo Entertainment.

Plot details and further casting have not been disclosed. The Hollywood Reporter says New Line took the project out of turnaround from Netflix earlier this year, with production due to begin in Europe in early 2027; Collider also cites a 2027 shoot. The A.V. Club, citing reports, says Netflix wanted the film but talks stalled when Cregger made a theatrical release non-negotiable.

Cregger said the Warner Bros./New Line team were "an absolute dream to collaborate with" on Weapons, and studio heads Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy called Lawrence "one of the most gifted and compelling actors working today". Coverage places the news after Weapons, which Variety says grossed $270 million worldwide, and Cregger's Resident Evil, which Deadline says has passed $200 million globally while Collider gives $196 million. Lawrence's next film is What Happens at Night, directed by Martin Scorsese and co-starring Leonardo DiCaprio, and she also returns in the Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, which Digital Spy says opens on 20 November.
