The story, neutrally told

The Dallas Cowboys lost 34-31 to the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3, when Tyler Loop kicked a 56-yard field goal at the end of the game. Trailing 31-28, Dallas had a first down at the Baltimore 2-yard line with 23 seconds left but did not score a touchdown, and settled for a tying field goal by Brandon Aubrey. Seven seconds remained after the kick, and Lamar Jackson's 27-yard pass to Zay Flowers moved Baltimore into field-goal range.

On his radio show, owner Jerry Jones said the coaches have no explanation they are satisfied with and that mistakes were made. Jones said the focus is on an evaluation of how not to repeat the mistakes, and that the team is still in the division race. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer, who also calls the plays, said he did not do well in the final 28 seconds.

He said he overcoached quarterback Dak Prescott on third down and let that carry over into his decision about kicking the ball. Fox News also reported that communication between special teams coordinator Nick Sorensen and game management coordinator Ryan Feder fell short, and that Schottenheimer said he and Jones are closely aligned after a good conversation. Dallas is 1-2 and visits the winless Houston Texans on Sunday.
