The story, neutrally told

Right · 2The National Jewish Advocacy Center (NJAC) asked the U.S. Department of Justice on Monday, 26 October 2026, to investigate New York City's public school system over alleged discrimination against Jewish students since the Hamas-led attacks of 7 October 2023. Right · 2The letter was addressed to Harmeet K. Dhillon, who heads the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, and asks the division to use its Title IV school desegregation authority to investigate the Board of Education of the City School District of the City of New York, which operates as the city Department of Education. Right · 1NJAC CEO and director Mark Goldfeder said: "When antisemitism drives Jewish children out of public schools, that is segregation by intimidation," and "Jewish students have an equal right to safety, and to stay."

Right · 1The letter says parents of Jewish children who attend or were driven from the schools, and Jewish employees of the Board, are prepared to be interviewed. Right · 2It cites a report by United Jewish Teachers, a group of Jewish educators in the city's schools, which documented 250 antisemitic and anti-Israel incidents from October 2023 through July 2026; the group's president, Moshe Spern, told JNS it fully supports the call for a DOJ investigation. The New York Post dates that report to August. Right · 1According to the New York Post, the letter also points to individual cases: a Park Slope teacher accused in a legal filing of posting "Long live Yahya al-Sinwar" in a 2024 group chat, and a Bath Beach social studies teacher disciplined for allegedly telling students that Larry Silverstein knew of the 9/11 attacks in advance.

Right · 1The Post reports the letter says enrollment in Jewish day schools and yeshivas rose by 3,115 students in New York State in 2025-26, including 1,587 in the city, while public school enrollment has declined. Right · 2Two federal probes are already pending: the U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights opened one in April 2026 under Title VI over lessons by NYC Educators for Palestine, and, per the Post, a "shared ancestry" investigation began in November 2023. Right · 1The city does not track how many Jewish students attend public schools; a 2023 UJA-Federation estimate put about 75,000 Jewish children in public or non-Jewish private schools across New York City, Long Island and Westchester.

Right · 1A Justice Department spokesperson said the department "takes allegations of antisemitism seriously and is committed to enforcing federal civil rights laws that protect students from discrimination"; the city Department of Education and Mayor Zohran Mamdani's office did not immediately respond to the Post.

Framing
Both outlets present the request as a response to real, documented antisemitism driving Jewish families from public schools. JNS leads with Goldfeder's "segregation by intimidation" quote; the Post frames it as a call on the Trump administration to act as parents pull children out.
Emphasis
JNS stresses the Title IV legal basis and support from United Jewish Teachers; the Post stresses individual teacher cases, rising Jewish school enrollment and its own earlier reporting.
Leaves out or plays down
Neither outlet carries a response from the city Department of Education or Mayor Mamdani's office beyond the Post noting they did not respond; no critics of the claims are quoted, and neither tests the link between incidents and enrollment shifts.
Charged language
“segregation by intimidation”“rampant antisemitism”“Israel-bashing”“brazenly”“Jew-hatred”
For example
““When antisemitism drives Jewish children out of public schools, that is segregation by intimidation,”” — JNS
“because of rampant antisemitism” — New York Post
“organizing a series of Israel-bashing lessons” — New York Post
