The story, neutrally told

Jordan Burton, 33, was sentenced at the Old Bailey on Wednesday to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 10 years for the murder of Daniel Allright. Burton was 14 when he hit Mr Allright, then 16, with a piece of wood in an attack by a group of youths in Lewisham, south-east London, in September 2006. Mr Allright developed epilepsy after the attack and was found dead in his bathroom in March 2022, aged 31. A post-mortem examination found the cause of death was post-traumatic epilepsy.

Burton initially denied involvement but pleaded guilty to violent disorder and a wounding offence after the attack; the outlets differ on the year and the exact charge. He received a two-year youth rehabilitation order, according to the Mirror. He was later charged with murder. At trial he told jurors he had been pressurised into admitting the assault, but the jury convicted him. The Mirror reports he was arrested in June 2024 after failing to attend a voluntary interview following Mr Allright's death, and was found guilty on Tuesday.

Judge Anthony Leonard KC cited aggravating features including the use of a wooden weapon, group violence, and Burton taking the leading role. Detective Sergeant Chris Taylor said the investigation was challenging because of the time elapsed. Mr Allright's mother, Geraldine Henderson, said she watched him have thousands of seizures over 16 years. Defence counsel Nick Corsellis said Burton had been released by Crystal Palace aged 13 due to an injury, leaving him with much time on his hands.
