The story, neutrally told

Sergei Karaganov, a prominent Russian foreign policy strategist, warned that Russia would 'go nuclear' against European countries if they continue to back Ukraine. According to the Daily Mail, he told the BBC that the first series of blows would be conventional, but that if Europe did not surrender Russia would have to use nuclear weapons, leaving 'little left of some European countries'. He dismissed the idea of a nuclear response from Britain or the United States, saying 'there will be no response from Europe'.

The Daily Mirror reports a separate interview in which he said Russia would be forced to launch a nuclear strike if NATO countries deployed troops to Ukraine or if there were a direct threat to Russian territory, including Kaliningrad. In that interview he said he hoped it would not come to that and was working to prevent it, but also said a nuclear war in Europe 'could easily be won' although millions of innocent people would die. Asked about his earlier call for a pre-emptive nuclear strike, he replied 'It's not too late. It's never too late.'

The Mirror describes him as a former Putin adviser for 12 years and a distinguished professor at Moscow's Higher School of Economics, while the Mail calls him honorary chairman of Russia's Council for Foreign and Defence Policy. The remarks followed a diplomatic note, seen by Reuters, in which Russia warned NATO on Wednesday it was ready to use its entire arsenal, including nuclear weapons, if NATO tried to isolate Kaliningrad. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte replied that NATO is a defensive alliance and told Russia to 'stop the nuclear threats'.

The Mail adds that Western officials accuse Moscow of cyber-attacks, sabotage and drone incursions in Europe, and that Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the BBC Europe is waging war against Russia by arming Ukraine.
