The story, neutrally told

Hedge fund executive Kenneth C. Griffin pledged $3 billion to Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), announced on Wednesday 30 September 2026. CMU and outlets describe it as the largest individual gift to a university in history, and the largest ever by Griffin. The Independent reports that the university intends to use $2 billion for a new campus, CMU Miami, in the Wynwood neighbourhood.

The Washington Examiner says the money will primarily go to the Miami campus, which is expected to open for graduate students in 2028 and take undergraduates four years later. The Independent says construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, with the campus expected to support more than 3,500 students, about 300 faculty and more than 600 staff. The Independent reports Griffin bought the 35-acre site from developer Moishe Mana for $1.1 billion.

The remaining $1 billion goes to the Pittsburgh campus, roughly half for CMU's top priorities and half for the School of Computer Science, to be renamed for Griffin. CMU President Farnam Jahanian thanked Griffin and framed the project around artificial intelligence and a new model for higher education. The Washington Examiner adds that Griffin will join CMU's Board of Trustees, moved Citadel's headquarters to Miami in 2022, and recently vowed to redirect investment from New York City after a spat with Mayor Zohran Mamdani.
