The story, neutrally told

Kentucky State Police Trooper Hayden Phillips was shot and killed on Monday on northbound Interstate 65 in Warren County, near Bowling Green. Early reporting said the circumstances were unclear, including whether Phillips had stopped the vehicle; later reports describe a traffic stop of a Honda Civic with temporary Alabama plates. A statewide Blue Alert was issued, and Louisville Metro Police captured the suspect, Emonnie Branch, 51, that evening.

The Independent reports Branch was arrested nearly 100 miles away after officers used a vehicle grappler to disable his car. Fox News and the New York Post report Branch was denied bond on a charge of murder of a first responder and is held without bond in Warren County jail. The Independent and Fox say Branch was on probation for a fraud-related conviction; Fox adds that a Tennessee prosecutor said he was already wanted for a probation violation.

Phillips, 30, was a three-year state police veteran based in Bowling Green and a father of three. Gov. Andy Beshear called him a hero, and Commissioner Phillip Burnett Jr. said the agency would seek justice. U.S. Attorney Kyle Bumgarner said the Justice Department would give state prosecutors every support to pursue the maximum sentence.
