The story, neutrally told

Mixed · 2Kenya's health ministry confirmed on Wednesday 14 October a second Ebola case, a 39-year-old man who is a close relative of the first case. Left · 1He was already in quarantine when he fell ill on Tuesday. Al Jazeera reports his symptoms were fever, fatigue and joint pain, and that he is in a designated treatment centre receiving care. Centre · 1The ministry said detecting his illness early improved his chances of recovery and limited the chance of him passing the virus on. It said both cases are linked, that there is no evidence of spread in the wider community, and it urged the public to "stay calm but vigilant".

Mixed · 2The first case was a 40-year-old Kenyan businessman who died on 5 October at a Nairobi hospital. He had travelled from DR Congo through Uganda to Kenya without his illness being detected. Mixed · 2The BBC reports that officials found the first patient had been in contact with 128 people. Of these, 113 had been found since Tuesday, 108 were in quarantine in Kenya, and tracing of the remaining 15 continued. Al Jazeera cites Health Minister Aden Duale saying on 7 October that at least 57 contacts had been traced, with 10 immediately quarantined. Left · 1Al Jazeera says the first case raised concerns about border screening in the region. It says the DRC–Uganda border has been closed since May, so it is unclear how the man entered Uganda. Alan Kasujja of the Ugandan government's media centre questioned how Kenya let him in through its airport and wrote on X, "Leave Uganda out of this conversation. We don't have Ebola here."

Left · 1Kenya's Director-General for Health, Patrick Amoth, said last week that a meeting with DRC and Ugandan officials and the Africa CDC was scheduled to investigate how the patient travelled through three countries undetected. Mixed · 2The outbreak in DR Congo began in May and is caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, which is relatively rare and has no approved vaccine or treatment, though trials are under way. Both outlets put deaths in DR Congo above 4,000 and call it the second-largest or second most deadly known outbreak. Al Jazeera adds that it has more than 9,000 cases and that Kenya is the fourth country with a linked case. Centre · 1The incubation period for Ebola ranges from two to 21 days, so people exposed may not fall ill for several weeks.
