The story, neutrally told

Marvel Studios president and Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige was honoured as Pioneer of the Year by the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation at the Beverly Hilton on Wednesday 30 September. Chris Pratt, Jon Favreau and Disney Entertainment chairman Alan Bergman were on hand to pay tribute, and Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Bettany, Hailee Steinfeld, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby and Marvel's Louis D'Esposito sent video messages. Variety reports that composer Michael Giacchino took part by video because of illness and introduced a large tiki band that played Marvel movie tunes with a Polynesian flair.

Pratt joked that he auditioned for Feige "probably 7 or 8,000 times" before landing Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, said that at the time of casting he was "kind of fat" and not an obvious action star, and thanked Feige for taking a chance when it was not obvious to others it would work. Pratt also said Feige "believes in the movies, and even more than that he believes in the people who make the movies," and credited Feige's early support of directors including James Gunn, Ryan Coogler, Taika Waititi, Destin Daniel Cretton and the Russo brothers. Favreau recalled his partnership with Feige going back to 2008's Iron Man and joked that Feige listens to movie soundtracks in the car, including the Ferngully soundtrack.

Bergman cited Feige's record of 38 movies in 17 years that have earned more than $35 billion at the box office, twelve of them above $1 billion and three above $2 billion each. In accepting, Feige, 25 years into his Marvel career, said Avengers: Doomsday is only Marvel's 39th movie, praised moviegoing as bringing people back to theatres, and called the audience the final step in a film's collaboration, "the real movie magic". The event raised $1.9 million for the Pioneers Assistance Fund, which supports in-need people in the film distribution and exhibition community; Variety adds that attendees included Disney chief Josh D'Amaro, AMC's Adam Aron and Regal's Eduardo Acuna, and that the room was also buzzing over Paramount Skydance's news that Mattel CEO Ynon Kreiz is joining David Ellison as co-CEO.
