The story, neutrally told

Centre · 1The original brass Yale key to Sir Paul McCartney's childhood home sold for £6,100 at auction. Centre · 1Dominic Winter Auctioneers sold it to a private collector for three times its pre-sale estimate of £2,000-£3,000. Centre · 1The house at 20 Forthlin Road, Liverpool, is where McCartney lived with his family from 1955 until late 1963, and where he wrote songs and made early home recordings with John Lennon.

Centre · 1The house was built in 1949 and has been owned by the National Trust since 1995. McCartney lived there with his parents, Mary and Jim, and his younger brother Mike, and Mary died a year after the move. Centre · 1The key came with a three-page letter from the then occupant, Ashley Jones, and a period photograph of the house. Jones wrote to 13-year-old New York Beatles fan Kathleen Salt (née Duffy) that he had been given two original keys and believed the one he sent could have been McCartney's. Centre · 1Four Beatles autographs inscribed to "Kathy", with photographs and a newsletter, were also sold. Her father, Frank Duffy, who worked for the band's security team on their first American tour in 1964, had obtained them. They sold together for £5,124 to a UK private collector against an estimate of £3,000–£5,000.

Centre · 1Chris Albury, director at Dominic Winter Auctioneers, said the competition showed that "the Beatles’ popularity remains as strong as ever" and that the key has a "remarkable provenance stretching back to 1965".
