The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Kuwait has revoked the citizenship of 415 people under six decrees published in its official gazette. Centre · 2Decree No. 156 was the largest, withdrawing citizenship from 286 people and those who obtained nationality through dependency. Centre · 1The other decrees covered smaller groups: Decree No. 155 of 2026 revoked certificates for six people, Decree No. 157 covered 14 women, Decree No. 158 covered 25 people, Decree No. 159 covered 41 and Decree No. 160 covered 43, with dependants also affected in several of them.

Centre · 2The 415 figure counts principal cases, so the total number affected could be higher because several measures extend to dependants. Centre · 1The gazette, Kuwait Al Youm, did not publish the names of those affected, but The National reported that billionaire real estate and investment figure Mahmoud Haidar is among them. Centre · 2The decrees are part of a continuing national review of citizenship cases that has led to thousands of revocations over the past two years.

Centre · 1In June 2026 Kuwait revoked the citizenship of more than 2,000 people in eight decrees, and in 2025 it revoked almost 50,000 in a sweeping review that officials said left "no one exempt". Centre · 1Kuwaiti law allows revocation for fraud, forgery or false statements in obtaining nationality, unauthorised dual nationality, and actions deemed against the state's "supreme interests"; Kuwaitis are about 1.5 million of a population of about 4.5 million.
