The story, neutrally told

A large fire broke out in Bootle, Merseyside, on the evening of Tuesday 29 September, with smoke visible across the area. The Daily Express and the Daily Mirror place it at the Fast Fit Garage on Fernhill Road. Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said crews were alerted at 8.23pm and sent six fire engines and one aerial appliance.

The service described the incident as a building fire, split into three sectors, with firefighters in breathing apparatus and an aerial appliance being set up. Its statement told residents to keep doors and windows closed, to keep medication close if they have a health condition, and to call NHS 111 if they feel ill effects. The Express reported that the police cordon had been widened and dozens of emergency vehicles were on Fernhill Road and Aintree Road.

The Mirror said a nearby resident heard loud bangs like fireworks, and that the building appeared to be fully gutted. The Mirror added that a large crowd had gathered despite the fire service urging people to stay away. Neither report gives a cause, or any information on injuries, at the time of publication; the incident was ongoing.
