The story, neutrally told

Right · 1Lebanese President Joseph Aoun urged the UN Security Council to extend the mandate of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for another year, in a meeting with UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix. Right · 1Aoun warned that UNIFIL's withdrawal would leave a security vacuum in southern Lebanon, have negative consequences for regional security and leave developments on the ground without international monitoring. Right · 1He said Israeli attacks and the occupation of southern villages and towns, most of them within UNIFIL's area of operations, made its presence particularly important.

Right · 1Aoun also cited the force's social, humanitarian, healthcare and educational work, and said that if Israeli forces withdrew to the international border and the Lebanese army deployed there, the army would need the peacekeepers' humanitarian and logistical support. Centre · 1Separately, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri met Lacroix in Beirut and said there is an official Lebanese consensus on keeping UNIFIL and continuing its mission under UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Centre · 1Berri said Lebanon would keep working to safeguard its sovereign rights, protect its borders and end Israeli occupation, and that UNIFIL's role goes beyond security to humanitarian, social, cultural and economic activities.

Mixed · 2The request runs against an existing Security Council decision: in August 2025 the council decided to end UNIFIL's mandate on Dec. 31, 2026, followed by a gradual, safe and coordinated drawdown and withdrawal over a year. Centre · 1UNIFIL was established in 1978 after Israel's invasion of southern Lebanon, and its mandate was expanded after the 2006 war under Resolution 1701.
