The story, neutrally told

Right · 1Lebanon decided on Thursday 15 October to release TikTok content creator Georges Dib, dropping drug trafficking and smuggling charges against him under a new general amnesty law, a judicial source told AFP. Mixed · 2Dib, known online as "Doctor Food" or "Dr Food", has more than eight million followers, according to AFP. The judge in the case ordered his immediate release, the judicial source said. Centre · 1Gulf News, citing local media reports, said the Mount Lebanon Criminal Court ordered the release of George Hanna Dib and ruled that the case fell within the amnesty law, ending the proceedings. It added that he subsequently returned to his hometown.

Right · 1Dib was arrested in August, after being sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment in March. An arrest warrant had been issued two years earlier for "manufacturing narcotics, trafficking and smuggling abroad", according to state-run media cited by AFP. Centre · 1Gulf News said he had been detained over allegations of making and smuggling narcotics hidden in packages of a wafer product he had promoted online. His lawyer, Issam Khoury, denied his involvement and submitted evidence on his whereabouts and communications, MTV Lebanon reported. Right · 1Dib, who also owns confectionery businesses, kept posting on TikTok until his arrest, claiming to be "innocent" and urging followers "not to listen" to what was said about him.

Mixed · 2Parliament passed the amnesty law, which covers drug offences among other crimes, on 12 August; AFP called it the country's first since 1991. Gulf News said it was published in the Official Gazette on 15 October after the Constitutional Council rejected a legal challenge to it. Mixed · 2Earlier in October, Dib was granted bail in a separate domestic violence case brought by his former wife, Shorouk, but stayed in custody because of the drug proceedings. AFP said the two became known by posting cooking and daily-life content and separated after she accused him of abuse.
