The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Lee Child, creator of Jack Reacher, has confirmed that he has stepped away from writing the Reacher novels, 29 years after the series began. Centre · 2Collider reported the news from an exclusive interview timed to the release of Chain Reaction, the latest Reacher novel; Screen Rant's report cites Collider. Centre · 2His younger brother, Andrew Child, now writes the novels independently, and Lee Child said he does not see the manuscripts until the publisher receives them.

Centre · 2Lee Child said his brother is secretive about his work, which he called fair, because the style Lee created and Andrew has continued is completely improvised, with no plan or long-term view; he reads each book out of interest when the publisher gets it. Centre · 1Lee Child first collaborated with Andrew on The Sentinel in 2020 and handed over more responsibility in later books; Collider says Chain Reaction is the point where Andrew took on the bulk of the writing. Centre · 1Child said that giving the character to another author is natural, since the point of writing is to give the character away to readers, to film and television, and to other writers, and he said he is fine with Reacher fan fiction.

Centre · 1Collider says his departure is only from writing new novels: his name stays on the books, he remains a sounding board for Andrew, and he stays fully involved in the Prime Video television series. Centre · 2Reacher debuted in Killing Floor in 1997; Screen Rant says the series has more than 30 novels and over 100 million copies sold, and has been adapted into Tom Cruise films (2012–2016) and Prime Video's series starring Alan Ritchson. Centre · 1Collider also notes that Lee Child will co-write Zero Margin, the first Frances Neagley novel, with Yasmin Angoe, due in spring 2027.
