The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Wizards of the Coast has announced that "God Packs" will come to Magic: The Gathering, starting with Nauctis: The Sunken Realm, the game's first set of 2027. Centre · 1Wizards describes a God Pack as "an epic, rare Booster where every nonbasic card is a rare or mythic rare card", and says it will appear in every Magic Multiverse set. Centre · 2One in every 1,000 Booster Packs will be a God Pack. Collider lists its contents as a "God Pack celebration card", 10 non-foil rare and/or mythic rare cards, two non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, and two traditional foil Booster Fun rares or mythics.

Centre · 2One in every 300 Collector Boosters will be a God Pack. Collider lists its contents as one celebration card, one traditional foil land, three traditional foil default-frame rares or mythics, three non-foil Booster Fun rares or mythics, and five traditional foil Booster Fun rares or mythics. Centre · 1Play Boosters will now be called "Booster Packs". Centre · 1Wizards is removing foil common and uncommon cards from Booster Packs and will "no longer guarantee a foil card in every pack". Foils will be rare or mythic rare with an "increased drop rate". Collector Boosters lose two commons and one uncommon from their foil slots, which will not be replaced.

Centre · 1Screen Rant reports that Wizards attributes the changes to fan feedback, saying foils have "lost their luster", and calls the move a "trade-off" because booster printing is "more complex". Centre · 1Collider says Wizards states that "every booster you open should feel exciting and meaningful", and compares the change to the Pokémon TCG, whose collectors use "God Packs" for boosters full of high-value cards. It notes Magic's version differs in that the first card shows you have opened a God Pack. Centre · 1Collider places the change in the context of Magic's earlier booster changes: Draft and Set Boosters were merged into Play Boosters in 2024 after Set Boosters outsold Draft Boosters. It also places it among other trading card games courting collectors, including Yu-Gi-Oh!, One Piece and Pokémon TCG, amid scalping. It says the change could excite collectors more than players.

Centre · 1Nauctis: The Sunken Realm is scheduled for release on February 5, 2027.
