The story, neutrally told

Mahathir Mohamad, Malaysia's two-time prime minister, aged 101, has been admitted to hospital for observation, his office confirmed on Wednesday. He was admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur, the same hospital where his wife of 70 years, Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, had died. Siti Hasmah, 100, died on Monday and was buried that day. Bloomberg reported that Mahathir, who uses a motorised wheelchair and an oxygen tube, was visibly overcome with grief at the burial.

The reason for the admission has not been made public. Aide Sufi Yusoff said the office was awaiting a diagnosis from his doctors. His son Mokhzani Mahathir told the state-owned news agency Bernama that the past two days had been very stressful, but that "for now, he is okay and there is no cause for concern". In a video on his social media accounts, Mahathir told Pahang ruler Sultan Abdullah Ahmad Shah that he had not expected her death, saying she had been well the night before.

He has been in and out of hospital in recent years. The South China Morning Post lists a lung infection in October 2024, a heart institute stay for fatigue, and a three-week stay in January after a hip fracture. It also notes bypass surgeries in 1989 and 2007. Both outlets place him in the context of a long career: prime minister from 1981 to 2003, and again later. His 1998 dismissal of Anwar Ibrahim, now prime minister, is mentioned in both.
