The story, neutrally told

Centre · 2Malaysian customs said on Wednesday 28 October that they had seized about 49.5 million ringgit (US$12.11 million) worth of advanced artificial intelligence chips this month. Centre · 1Authorities say they are closing in on a syndicate suspected of smuggling high-performance semiconductors through the country's main airport. Centre · 2On 15 October, inspectors found 30 server units containing advanced AI chips in the free trade zone at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, the airport's customs director, Aspalila Ag Tuah, told reporters.

Centre · 1Initial investigations found the shipment originated from an Asian country and was to be re-exported to another country in the continent, a move that required a trade permit. Centre · 2Aspalila said the servers were falsely declared as electronic components and shipped through Malaysia so that no restrictions would apply on their onward export. Centre · 2A Malaysian firm that facilitated the shipment has been called in to assist the investigation.

Centre · 2The shipment is suspected to have been carried out by a network responsible for a similar smuggling attempt that customs foiled in June, and at least five cases are linked to the syndicate, with seizures worth more than 100 million ringgit in total; Aspalila declined to give more details, citing the ongoing probe. Centre · 2Malaysia imposed export controls last year on the movement of US-origin advanced AI chips, following US pressure to stem their flow into China.
